About Pilates?
Pilates is a mind-body exercise which demands a healthy measure of both mental and physical training. Through a series of coordinated and flowing movements which are based on breathing and relaxation, the primary aim of any Pilates program is to “stretch and strengthen” in order to build a more balanced and flexible body, while simultaneously ensuring that true body alignment is constantly maintained.
PILATES IS NOT SO MUCH ABOUT WHAT YOU DO, BUT HOW YOU DO IT.
Even the simplest of exercises are designed to target the deep “core” postural muscles of the body by a process known as “centring”. Exercises, from the very beginning, work on the stabilizing muscles to ensure a sound foundation from the inside out, so to speak. Hence, improvement to posture is an important ultimate outcome, as is a longer, leaner overall physique.
A typical program begins with gentle movements, each of them being correctly aligned in order to isolate specific key muscles. As exercises advance, more complex movements are incorporated, always with the core stabilized. To attain greater muscular potency, flexibility and joint mobility but particularly so as to challenge certain deep stabilizing muscle groups, the traditional Pilates machines and accessories are used for added resistance and support.
